FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - NAU cross country began its season in impressing fashion as the men cruised to a first place finish and the women finishing second. The Lumberjacks were led by junior Matt McElroy who finished first with a time of 24:45.3 and sophomore Melanie Townsend who finished third with a time of 17:12.4.
The NAU men were dominant at this year's George Kyte Classic having six runners finish in the top ten. Junior Caleb Hoover finished third with a time of 24:56.4 while Andy Trouard, Nathan Weitz, Korey Krotzer and Alejandro Montano finished sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth respectively. The Lumberjack men were able to accomplish this without the likes of Brian Shrader (2012 George Kyte Classic Champion) and Futsum Zienasellassie (2012 First Team All-American) who did not compete.
The NAU women were also dominant at this year's George Kyte Classic with four runners finishing in the top ten. Sophomore Melanie Townsend, sophomore Rolonda Jumbo and freshman Paige Gilchrist finished third, fourth and fifth respectively. Freshman Vanessa Estrada finished tenth as the lumberjacks start the year with a second place finish after finishing fifth at the 2012 George Kyte Classic. The University of Arizona women were able to come away with the first place finish edging out the NAU women by just three points.
NAU Cross Country will compete next on September 20th at the Dave Murray Invitational in Tuscon, Ariz.
