FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Northern Arizona University's cross country program will open up its season Saturday as it hosts the George Kyte Classic. This year marks the 33rd running of the annual George Kyte Classic at Flagstaff's Buffalo Park. The meet is named after the late Dr. George Kyte, professor emeritus of history at NAU. Dr. Kyte was a longtime supporter of NAU athletics, track and field and cross country in particular. The event was run with Dr. Kyte in attendance until 2004.
Lumberjack cross country had a strong showing at the 2012 George Kyte Classic. Brian Shrader finished first in his debut as a Lumberjack helping the Lumberjack men to a first place team finish and the Lumberjack women finished fourth last year.
Returning from last year's competition are Arizona State University, Dixie State College, Grand Canyon University, Pima Community College and University of Arizona. The women of Arizona State finished second last year led by Shelby Houlihan who finished first individually, while the men finished third as a team. The women of University of Arizona finished third and the men finished fourth. The Dixie State men finished sixth at Buffalo Park last season with a fifth place finish from the women. The Grand Canyon University men finished fifth and the women sixth. Southern Utah University will not compete at the George Kyte Classic this season after a first place finish from the women and a second place finish from the men.
"We are excited to host the 33rd annual George Kyte Invitational here in Flagstaff," said Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Eric Heins. "It is a great opportunity for both the men's and women's teams to work on running as a pack and test out their fitness level against some very good runners from around the Southwest."
