Catherine Chavez enters her fourth season as an assistant coach for the NAU volleyball team after an impressive playing career under current NAU head coach Ken Murphy at UTEP. Previously she served as a Graduate Assistant for the UTEP Volleyball team from 2012-13.
Chavez and the current coaching staff led by Murphy have helped develop NAU into one of the premier teams in the Big Sky Conference and the reigning conference champions. Over the last three seasons, the program has tallied the third-most overall wins (68) and tied for the second-most Big Sky victories (39) among the teams in the conference. Consistently among the Big Sky’s top teams both offensively and defensively, the Lumberjacks own a 68-24 overall mark and 39-13 record in conference play the last three years.
Chavez was a four-year athlete at UTEP where she is only one of three players in school history with both 1,000-plus kills and 1,000-plus digs. She finished her career seventh all-time with 1,108 kills and second with 1,229 digs. She garnered five All-Tournament selections during her career and also excelled in the classroom as she was named to the Conference USA Commissioners Honor Roll all four years and was a member of the UTEP Dean’s List on four occasions. Chavez also served on the UTEP Student Athlete Advisory Committee from 2007-09.
She joined the NAU coaching staff with a successful club coaching resume that includes coaching various age groups with the APAC Volleyball Club and Sunspots Volleyball Club as an assistant coach from 2007-09 and later as a head coach from 2009-13.
Chavez, a native of El Paso, Texas, earned her Bachelor’s of Heath Sciences in Health Promotions from UTEP in May 2010.
