FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – The Northern Arizona volleyball Summer Spotlight continues this week with incoming freshman Heaven Harris, who answered questions with the NAU Athletics Communications Department.
Harris is coming off a senior season that ended with her not only being named to the All-6A Conference First Team, but also to the 2016 All-Arizona Team. The Phoenix native was recognized as the state's top opposite hitter after averaging 2.3 kills and totaling 256 kills. She recorded a scorching hitting percentage of .347 and also proved to be a force as a blocker, collecting 35 solo stuffs among her 108 total blocks. With Harris leading the way, Hamilton High School posted a 35-8 record this past fall in her final prep season.
Read Harris' Summer Spotlight Q&A answers below, and keep an eye out for next week's installment of the Summer Spotlight series.
Q: What are you looking forward to the most about being a part of the NAU Volleyball team?
A: "The family aspect of the team. That's the reason I decided to come to NAU."
Q: If you had to describe yourself as a volleyball player in one word, what would it be and why?
A: "Determined. I'm always determined to play my hardest and be the best I can be in practice and outside of practice."
Q: One of your hobbies is ceremics. What is one thing you've made that you're most proud of?
A: "I love ceramics. I made a few tikis in my high school ceramics class. I made five, and I've got three at home, but I sold two of them. My teacher liked them and bought it."
Q: In the past few years, NAU Volleyball has had a pipeline from Hamilton High School with Payton Bock and Lauren Jacobsen. This fall, you'll be joining the team along with your high school teammate Kimber Kemp. Describe your experience at Hamilton?
A: "My biggest source of encourage was my coach Sharon Vanis. I played for her in club for three years too. She's one of the best coaches I've ever had and she tells all of us to go with her heart and where we feel comfortable. The family aspect at Hamilton is the same as it is at NAU."
Q: What's the best thing about having Kimber along with you coming into NAU?
A: "It's super fun because I know exactly how she plays. She's encouraging and she has a fun personality. It's nice to have a familiar face."
Q: What is one fun fact about yourself?
A: "Sometimes, I'll randomly hiccup once and then I won't hiccup again."
