Volleyball Hosts Bethune-Cookman Friday and Saturday in Home Opener

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - For the first time this season, the Northern Arizona volleyball team will play in front of their home crowd in the Rolle Activity Center with a pair of matches versus Bethune-Cookman on Friday and Saturday. Friday's match will start at 6 p.m. with Saturday's match at 7 p.m. NAU carries a 17-match home win streak into the weekend dating back to the end of the 2014 season.

Ken Murphy's Sound Bite: "It's a good opportunity to get a little rest and refocus this weekend. We're a team that's going to continue to get better as the season goes along. The more experience we gain, the better we're going to be. This weekend is a good opportunity to play in our gym, to grow as a team and continue to challenge ourselves."

Promotions: Friday's match will be a White Out. All fans are encouraged to wear white to the match with the first 250 students receiving a free white NAU t-shirt. On Saturday, NAU will host Neon Night with all fans encouraged to wear their best neon attire. The first 250 fans will receive a free blue and gold NAU pom pom.

Previewing The 'Jacks: NAU will open its home schedule this weekend following its first seven matches of the season away from Flagstaff. Over the Labor Day weekend, NAU accumulated a 4-1 record during its five matches in four day span. After posting a 2-1 record at the Saluki Invitational, the Lumberjacks traveled to Martin, Tenn. where they defeated UT Martin in four sets and swept Alabama A&M to improve to 5-2. The 'Jacks were led by senior Lauren Jacobsen who posted a total of 29 kills in the two matches versus UT Martin and Alabama A&M. The reigning Big Sky Offensive Player of the Week posted a career-best .524 hitting percentage in the win over Alabama A&M and is currently second in the conference with 4.62 kills per set. Freshman Abby Akin was named the Defensive Player of the Week and is second in the conference with 1.32 blocks per set. She tallied 10 blocks versus UT Martin and Alabama A&M.

The Bethune-Cookman Scout: Bethune-Cookman picked up its first win of the season last weekend at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Tournament in New Orleans, La. in five sets over Tulane. Overall this season, the Wildcats are 1-6 following losses to Sam Houston State and UT Rio Grande Valley also at the Sugar Bowl Tournament. Alana Handy leads the team with 2.83 kills per set this season. She posted her second double-double of the season with 20 kills and 12 digs in the Tulane victory. Phylecia Armstrong set a program record with a .750 hitting percentage against Tulane, recording 15 kills with zero errors on 20 attempts. Armstrong ranks second on the team with 2.21 kills per set and is the team leader in hitting percentage (.291) and blocks (24).

  • NAU and Bethune-Cookman will be meeting for the first time in school history.

NAU Quick Sets: 

  • The Lumberjacks are 47-11 in non-conference play since 2011.
  • The Lumberjacks currently rank eighth nationally with 55 service aces as a team. Their 2.12 aces per set average ranks 12th. NAU also ranks 25th with its .285 hitting percentage.
  • Redshirt sophomore Brittni Dorsey ranks fifth nationally with 16 service aces and is seventh with 0.67 aces per set.
  • Murphy moved into second all-time in school history with his 73rd victory on Monday over Alabama A&M. He will coach his 100th match at the helm of the Lumberjacks on Friday.
