NAU Student-Athletes Give Back in Record Numbers During 2014-15 Year
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Last year, Northern Arizona University student-athletes performed an incredible 4,378 total community service hours setting a new department record. During the 2014-15 academic year, Lumberjack student-athletes outdid themselves resetting the record with over 5,000 hours out in the Flagstaff community and the greater Northern Arizona region in an outstanding department-wide effort to give back.

NAU Men Win Second Consecutive Big Sky All-Sports Trophy
OGDEN, Utah – Northern Arizona men have captured their second consecutive Big Sky All-Sports Trophy, the conference office announced Tuesday. The Lumberjacks went into the outdoor track championship with the lead, and maintained it after a tie for first place capturing their fourth straight outdoor title.

NAU Athletics Celebrates 42 Student-Athlete Graduates This Weekend
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – In total, 42 Northern Arizona University student-athletes will receive their degrees from the university this weekend during the Spring 2015 commencement ceremonies held on campus yesterday and today. Including the 21 student-athletes who participated in the Fall 2014 commencement ceremonies, the NAU Athletics Department produced a total of 63 graduates for the 2014-15 academic year.

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – The academic honors continued to pile up for NAU Athletics Wednesday night as four graduating student-athletes were among forty-three students who received the university’s prestigious Gold Axe Award. The athletics contingent at the Gold Axe and Distinguished Seniors awards banquet included Diane Buzzard (women’s soccer), Laura Jabczenski (golf), Taylor Stephens (volleyball) and Johanna Vang (women’s tennis) as the quartet was bestowed with the coveted award.

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – On Wednesday, NAU’s brightest student-athletes were honored at the 37th annual Golden Eagle Awards held at the High Country Conference Center. The annual luncheon recognizes Northern Arizona University’s student-athletes who maintain at least a 3.0 grade point average in the classroom. FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – The NAU Athletics Department, spearheaded by the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), held its Student-Athlete for a Day on Tuesday for over 200 children throughout the northern Arizona region. The important Student-Athlete for a Day returned for the first time in three years and was a fun-filled day for both the Lumberjack student-athletes and the local youth.

Kemper Caps Career with Big Sky All-Tournament Honors
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – For her performance over the weekend at the Big Sky Championships, Northern Arizona volleyball senior Sydney Kemper was named to the All-Tournament team representing the Lumberjacks. In NAU's two tournament matches, Kemper averaged 3.75 kills and 2.75 digs per set and hit .309.

NAU Fights Until the End in Dramatic Semifinal Loss to Idaho State
POCATELLO, Idaho – In a battle fitted to decide the conference champion despite it being just the semifinal, the Northern Arizona volleyball team saw their season come to an end in a dramatic five-set loss to Idaho State, the defending Big Sky champs. The Bengals edged out the Lumberjacks by taking the final two sets after falling behind 2-1 – 25-22 20-25, 25-27, 28-26, 15-10 – to advance to the finals. NAU finished the season with a 21-8 record.

Volleyball Takes First Step at Big Sky Tourney with Idaho Sweep
POCATELLO, Idaho – The Northern Arizona volleyball team took their first step towards a Big Sky title on Thursday, posting a commanding sweep of fourth-seeded Idaho, 25-16, 25-20, 25-16, to move onto the conference semifinals. The fifth-seeded Lumberjacks (21-7) outhit the Vandals and held advantages in blocks, digs and aces, successfully avenging a sweep to Idaho earlier in the season by controlling the match in all facets.

OGDEN, Utah – Senior Sydney Kemper became the first player in school history to be recognized as a four-time all-conference honoree, heading a trio of Lumberjacks representing the Northern Arizona volleyball team on the All-Big Sky Conference teams. Junior Janae Vander Ploeg and sophomore Jensen Barton were also named to the all-conference teams as voted on by the league head coaches and announced by the conference office on Wednesday.

Volleyball Faces Idaho in First Round of Big Sky Championships on Thursday
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - This week, the Northern Arizona volleyball team will make their third consecutive appearance in the Big Sky Championships as the fifth-seed. The Lumberjacks will face fourth-seed Idaho in the first round of this year's conference tournament at 5 p.m. on Thursday in Pocatello, Idaho. With three victories in three days, NAU will capture its second Big Sky title in school history and first since 1999.

PORTLAND, Ore. – The Northern Arizona volleyball team ended a decade of frustration in Portland and clinched their fourth 20-win season in program history with a big block all match long in sweeping Portland State Saturday night. The 25-18, 25-15, 25-19 win will send NAU into next week's Big Sky Championships on a high note, having finished the regular season 20-7 overall and 11-5 in the conference. NAU will head into the conference tournament as the fifth-seed.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The Northern Arizona volleyball team was forced to play catch up all night long, but late rallies were not quite enough to put them over the edge as they dropped a tight 28-26, 19-25, 26-24, 25-23 match to Sacramento State on Thursday. NAU fell to 19-7 overall and 10-5 in the Big Sky heading into its regular season finale at Portland State on Saturday.

Vander Ploeg Named Big Sky POTW After Milestone Weekend
OGDEN, Utah – Janae Vander Ploeg enjoyed a milestone weekend and was rewarded with a Big Sky Conference Player of the Week honor announced by the conference office on Monday. Vander Ploeg joined the Northern Arizona volleyball's 1,000 career kills club and recorded two double-doubles in guiding the Lumberjacks to victories over Eastern Washington and Southern Utah.

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – The Rolle Activity Center home crowd packed a punch and the Northern Arizona volleyball team treated them to a 25-12, 25-21, 25-19 sweep of Southern Utah, sending Sydney Kemper, Hannah Hill and Taylor Stephens out with a win on Senior Night. With the win, the Lumberjacks finishes the season with a 10-1 home record, matching a program-best for season home win percentage (.909).

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Before this year's senior class joined the Northern Arizona volleyball program in 2011, the Lumberjacks had just one winning season in nine years and three total since the turn of the century. What has this senior class accomplished since arriving? Four winning seasons and 76 victories is the running total heading into Saturday's Senior Night match against Southern Utah.

NAU's Stephens Named Capital One Academic All-District Honoree
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Senior Taylor Stephens was selected onto the 2014 Capital One Academic All-District 8 second team, as voted on and announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America on Thursday. Stephens became the first Lumberjack volleyball player to be named Academic All-District since Lauren Campbell (first team) and Katie Bailey (second team) in 2011.

Vander Ploeg Joins 1,000 Kills Club, 'Jacks Clinch Postseason Berth
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Junior Janae Vander Ploeg became the 12th player in school history to reach 1,000 career kills, joining her teammate senior Sydney Kemper who accomplished the feat a week ago, in Northern Arizona volleyball’s four-set victory over Eastern Washington on Thursday. The Lumberjacks defeated the Eagles, 25-23, 19-25, 25-16, 25-15, and clinched a spot in the Big Sky Championships in the process improving to 9-4 in Big Sky play and 18-6 overall.

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - For the final time this season, the Northern Arizona volleyball team will play in the Rolle Activity Center as they host Eastern Washington on Thursday and Southern Utah on Saturday for their last homestand of 2014. FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – The Northern Arizona volleyball team brought the block party to the Rolle Activity Center, using strong play at the net to deny Weber State Saturday night in a three-set sweep, 32-30, 25-16, 25-16. The Lumberjacks tallied 15.0 blocks – their most in a three-set match this season and second-highest total overall – to force the Wildcats into 31 errors as they snapped their two-match skid.

Kemper Reaches 1,000 Career Kill Mark in Five-Set Loss to ISU
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – For the second straight season, it took five sets to determine the victor between the Northern Arizona volleyball team and Idaho State in the Rolle Activity Center. Unfortunately unlike last season, the result fell in the Bengals' favor Thursday night as they handed the Lumberjacks their first home loss of 2014, 25-27, 25-19, 25-18, 20-25, 17-15. NAU dropped to 16-6 overall and 7-4 in the Big Sky.

NAU Athletics Posts 85 Percent Graduation Success Rate
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Northern Arizona Athletics Department posted a school-best 85 percent Graduation Success Rate, as released by the NCAA national office Tuesday. It was the highest of the three state universities, and tied for the best in the Big Sky Conference.

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - The Northern Arizona volleyball team finds themselves right in the heart of the conference's elite heading into the final three weeks of the regular season and returns to the comforts of home this week with the hope of moving up the conference standings. The Lumberjacks will get a chance to directly improve their own odds of hosting the Big Sky Championships when they host conference-leading Idaho State on Thursday before welcoming Weber State to the Rolle Activity Center on Saturday. A total of 134 student-athletes participated in Red Ribbon Week visiting local schools, speaking with Flagstaff’s youth and interacting with them in athletic activities.

Volleyball Drops Four-Setter to Northern Colorado
GREELEY, Colo. – The Northern Arizona volleyball team had no problem starting sets, but could not finish off Northern Colorado Saturday night, losing in four sets, 25-22, 13-25, 29-27, 25-23. The Lumberjacks held early leads in all four sets, yet the Bears battled back to win three dropping NAU's record to 7-3 in the conference. The Lumberjacks are now 16-5 heading back home next week.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. – Led by the one-two combo of junior Janae Vander Ploeg and senior Sydney Kemper, the Northern Arizona volleyball team notched an all-important victory against North Dakota with big implications on Thursday. The duo combined for 27 kills propelling the Lumberjacks to a 25-20, 25-20, 25-18 sweep, dealing UND its first home loss this season and first in 11 matches dating back to Nov. 8, 2013.

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - Back out on the road for the second consecutive week, the Northern Arizona volleyball team will take on two of the Big Sky North Division's top teams traveling to North Dakota on Thursday at 5 p.m. followed by Northern Colorado on Saturday at 6 p.m. After this week, the Lumberjacks will have just one final road trip during the regular season, with it coming on the final week of the season.

POCATELLO, Idaho – In the first of two anticipated matchups between the Big Sky South Division co-leaders, both the Northern Arizona volleyball team and Idaho State dominated their way to a set win to begin Saturday night's meeting. Then the Bengals prevailed in the final two to come away with the 14-25, 25-14, 30-28, 25-23 victory to take sole possession of the division at the midway point of conference play.

OGDEN, Utah – The Northern Arizona volleyball team posted a successful start to their critical four-match road swing on Thursday, picking up their fourth consecutive win against Weber State. The Lumberjacks swept the Wildcats, 25-16, 25-17, 25-18, and did not trail on the scoreboard until the third set in a dominant team performance on both sides of the net.

The award is Kemper's third of her career and is the second Player of the Week nod for the Lumberjacks this season.

With the win, the Lumberjacks upped their record to 14-3 overall, matching the program's best start through 17 matches.

The Lumberjacks picked up their fourth conference win and is now 4-1 in the Big Sky and 13-3 overall following their fourth sweep in six home matches this season.

CEDAR CITY, Utah – Coming off a difficult loss at Idaho on Thursday, the Northern Arizona volleyball team bounced back in a big way Saturday night by handing Southern Utah its first Big Sky loss of the season. Led by a near triple-double performance by senior Sydney Kemper, the Lumberjacks received a variety of contributions across their lineup in the four-set win, 25-17, 22-25, 25-20, 25-17. NAU is now 3-1 in conference play and 12-3 overall.

The Lumberjacks will first travel to the Northwest to face Idaho on Thursday before making the trip to face Southern Utah. Thursday's match in Moscow, Idaho will start at 7 p.m. followed by Saturday's match at 6 p.m. in Cedar City, Utah.

HONOLULU, Hawaii – The Northern Arizona volleyball team fell to Hawai'i in three sets, 25-20, 25-23, 25-18, to close out their non-conference schedule Saturday night in Honolulu and saw their record drop to 9-2 heading into the Big Sky season. Although the result – a three-set sweep – was the same as the night before, the team's performance was anything but the same as the Lumberjacks showcased growth and grit in defeat.

HONOLULU, Hawaii – Friday night was a night of firsts for the Northern Arizona volleyball team. For the first time all season, the Lumberjacks dropped the first set and eventually suffered their first loss of 2014, falling in three sets, 25-18, 25-15, 25-18, to Hawai’i in front of a crowd of 5,941 at the Stan Sheriff Center.

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – The Northern Arizona volleyball team responded in a big way against a feisty UC Riverside squad to conclude the first day of their Lumberjack Classic with a second win – and eighth straight overall to start the season – in four sets. NAU registered a season-high 17.0 blocks, with nine coming in the final set, in its 25-17, 18-25, 25-19, 25-12, victory over the Highlanders Friday evening in the Rolle Activity Center.

NAU Wins Share of Tournament Title with Sweep of UTPA
EDINBURG, Texas – Two weekends down and the Northern Arizona volleyball team completed their Texas two-step with a three-set sweep of Texas-Pan American on Saturday, 25-23, 25-19, 25-17. The victory clinched a second straight perfect weekend to begin 2014, following three wins in Houston a week ago, and hammered down the Lumberjacks' 6-0 start to the season. They claimed a share of the UTPA Tournament championship as Texas Tech also finished the weekend 3-0 in Edinburg and they did not face each other.

NAU Volleyball Prevails Over Lamar for Fifth Straight Win
EDINBURG, Texas – The Northern Arizona volleyball prevailed early and broke away late in their second match of the day, picking up their fifth straight win to begin the season in the process at the UTPA Fieldhouse. The Lumberjacks earned the four-set victory, 25-21, 25-27, 25-12, 25-19, over a talented Lamar squad to improve to 5-0 this season and 2-0 at the UTPA Tournament heading into their tournament finale on Saturday.

Volleyball Defeats A&M-Corpus Christi to Begin UTPA Doubleheader
EDINBURG, Texas – The Northern Arizona volleyball team improved to 4-0 this season in winning their first match of the UTPA Tournament Friday morning with a four-set victory, 25-14, 21-25, 25-13, 25-22, over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The Lumberjacks will play Lamar this afternoon in their second match of the day at approximately 2:30 p.m. Flagstaff time.

NAU Volleyball Back to Texas, Looking to Build on Momentum
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - The Northern Arizona volleyball team makes a return trip to the Lone Star State this weekend for their second pre-conference tournament with a three-match slate at the UTPA Tournament in Edinburg, Texas. The Lumberjacks will play a doubleheader on Friday, first against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 8 a.m. followed by Lamar at 2:30 p.m. NAU will then play host Texas-Pan American on Saturday in the tournament finale at 12 p.m. All times are local to Flagstaff.

Volleyball Sweeps Chattanooga, Plays Tulsa This Afternoon
HOUSTON, Texas – With a quick turnaround following their season-opening win Friday night, the Northern Arizona volleyball team swept Chattanooga Saturday morning to begin the second day of the Marriott Houston Westchase Invitational. With the 25-17, 25-18, 25-17 victory, NAU ensured that its final match of the tournament against Tulsa would determine the tourney champion. Tulsa swept Houston Baptist in the day's first match.

NAU Caps Perfect Opening Weekend with Tulsa Victory
HOUSTON, Texas – The Northern Arizona volleyball team was an offensive juggernaut in their Marriott Houston Westchase Invitational finale Saturday afternoon, topping Tulsa in four sets, 25-15, 23-25, 25-23, 25-14, to win the Houston Baptist-hosted tournament. The Lumberjacks wrapped up the weekend with a perfect 3-0 start to the weekend, marking the fourth consecutive year in which they have started the season with at least three straight victories. The win allowed NAU to capture its seventh pre-conference tournament dating back to the start of the 2011 season.

HOUSTON, Texas – In typical first-match fashion, the Northern Arizona volleyball team was not perfect but they proved to be victorious in their 2014 season opener on Friday, defeating host Houston Baptist on the first day of the Marriott Houston Westchase Invitational. The Lumberjacks won their season opening match for the eighth time in the last nine years, doing so on Friday in four sets, 25-17, 21-25, 25-19, 25-14 behind a gritty effort.

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - The Northern Arizona volleyball team begins the 2014 season this weekend at the Husky Classic hosted by Houston Baptist. The Lumberjacks officially get the season under way on Friday at 5 p.m. versus Houston Baptist. They will conclude the tournament on Saturday, first against Chattanooga at 10 a.m. and wrapping up the weekend with Tulsa at 3 p.m.

NAU Student-Athletes Welcome Incoming Lumberjack Freshmen
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Nearly 200 Northern Arizona student-athletes helped greet the incoming NAU Class of 2018 over the last two days in partnership with Welcome Back Jacks. Volleyball Voted Tied for First in Big Sky Poll
OGDEN, Utah – Sporting one of the conference's deepest rosters, the Northern Arizona volleyball team received high preseason recognition on Tuesday as they will enter the 2014 season as preseason co-favorites to hoist the Big Sky trophy. In the Big Sky preseason poll voted on by the league's head coaches, the Lumberjacks and defending conference champion Idaho State each received four first-place votes and 108 points to sit tied atop the coaches' forecast. Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own team.
