Volleyball Picked Seventh in Big Sky Preseason Poll

OGDEN, Utah – Northern Arizona women’s volleyball was picked to finish seventh in the Big Sky Conference in the annual coaches’ poll released on Wednesday.  The Lumberjacks tied for seventh in the conference last season.

NAU finished with 26 total points, three short of Idaho State and Sacramento State tied for fifth place in the preseason poll.  Portland State and Montana were selected co-favorites with 56 points.

The Lumberjacks returns 10 letterwinners all with starting experience this fall.  Head coach Craig Choate also delivered four newcomers in the offseason with two juniors and two freshmen added to the program.

NAU finished 8-17 overall last year and 5-10 in the Big Sky Conference.   The 2010 season kicks off at the UniWyo Wyoming Invitational on Aug. 27.

The top four positions in the coaches’ poll were separated by six points with Montana, Portland State, Northern Colorado, and Eastern Washington all receiving first place votes.  Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own teams.  

Last fall, Northern Colorado defeated the regular season champions Portland State in the Big Sky Championship final.

DID YOU KNOW… The Lumberjacks had 11 of their 15 intercollegiate teams record a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher led by women’s soccer at 3.42. Women’s basketball was close behind at 3.38, followed by women’s cross country (3.38), volleyball (3.33), women’s golf (3.31), men’s cross country (3.26) and swimming and diving (3.22).
