BOISE, Idaho – In its final match of the 2009 Boise State
Bronco Invitational, Northern Arizona women’s volleyball fell
3-0 to tournament champion Tulsa on Saturday. The Lumberjacks were
defeated by scores of 25-17, 25-20, and 25-20 and finished third at
the invite. Lauren Campbell earned all-tournament team
NAU (1-2) went down early in the first set and was unable to cut into the Golden Hurricane lead the rest of the way. The women fought back and were within two (22-20) in both the second and third sets, but Tulsa (3-0) was able to hold off the Lumberjacks preserving the win.
"Tulsa was hands down the best team in the tournament," said
head coach Craig Choate. "After game one our lineup went to
four freshman and two sophomores. We played really good volleyball,
but that is not enough against a really good team. Tulsa is a
really good team."
Sophmore Lexi Sullivan led NAU with eight kills while freshman Lauren Campbell added seven. Freshmen Anna Gott and Kelli Dallman posted solid peripherals with 14 digs and 16 assists, respectively.
For Tulsa, Jordan Clampitt led all players with 23 assists while Jessica Adams led with 18 digs and Jennifer Eichler with 12 kills.
The Lumberjacks finished the Bronco Invitational with a 1-2 record. On Friday, NAU defeated Boise State 3-1 in the season opener and dropped two matches on Sunday with a 3-2 loss to Cal State Northridge and a 3-0 defeat against Tulsa.
"I knew this was going to be a ride for us because we scheduled a lot harder than last year and we are a lot younger," said Choate. "We are trying to build a program. I am okay with the weekend.
"I told the girls after I didn’t feel good about [Cal
State] Northridge. We fought but we didn’t play well. When we
got the right lineup in against Tulsa, which was a better team, we
played really good volleyball. I felt good about that."
NAU will compete in the Holiday Inn LA City Center Trojan Invitational in Los Angeles, Calif., next weekend. The Lumberjacks face Pepperdine at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 3, Florida Gulf Coast at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 4, and host No. 12 USC at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 5.
