Volleyball’s Brittany Stowers Named to CVU.com Stellar Spikers First Team

LEANDER, Texas – NAU volleyball senior Brittany Stowers has now added to her long list of awards following the 2008 season as she was named to the Collegiate Volleyball Update’s (CVU) Stellar Spikers First Team. Fourteen student-athletes earned first team honors, including three from national champion Penn State and two from runner-up Stanford.

Stowers was one of two liberos to earn the honor. In honoring the 88 total student athletes from across the nation, CVU.com looked for players that exhibited excellence and balance. While NCAA statistical rankings were considered, they weren't the only consideration. Also considered in forming the two teams of 14 and in choosing the 60 honorable mention selections was the impact the player had on helping her team succeed as well as conference awards.

First and second team selections were formed around the idea of building a team with a starting lineup of seven players and then two players per starting slot were chosen to fill out each team.

Stowers, who has now completed her eligibility at NAU, was named 2008 All-Big Sky First Team as well as the 2008 Libero of the Year in the Big Sky Conference. She was honored by the Big Sky all three seasons that she played for the Lumberjacks, and her first team honor this year marked the first time that a libero had been named to the first team in the Big Sky.

With 6.32 digs per set, Stowers finished her season ranked second in NCAA Division I. Lara Newberry of Chattanooga was first in that category and was also named to the CVU.com Stellar Spikers First Team.

Stowers completed her NAU career with 1,294 digs to rank second all-time, despite not playing her freshman season with the Lumberjacks. Added to her total digs at UTEP, Stowers tallied 1,953 digs in her career. Her total of 581 digs in the 2008 season is the most all-time in a single season at NAU, breaking her own record of 484 from 2007.
