OGDEN, Utah – Freshman Chiara Tomasetti was named Big Sky Player of the Week for the first time in the blue and gold. In her first season with the Lumberjacks, Tomasetti has garnered 15 singles wins and 14 doubles wins. Tomasetti came to Northern Arizona from Roesrath, Germany and is both regionally and nationally ranked at the No. 2 position in singles and the No. 1 position in doubles.
In singles, Tomasetti is regionally ranked No. 18 leading the Lumberjacks in wins with three match-clinching victories. In doubles, Tomasetti pairs with senior Blanka Szavay to lead the 'Jacks with 13 wins, including a 6-3 win over No. 44 nationally ranked ASU pair Alexandra Osborne and Nicole Fossa-Huergo. The NAU duo are No. 63 in the nation and are the first doubles pairs in the Big Sky to be nationally ranked this season.
This last weekend, Tomasetti competed against the Idaho Vandals Sunday, April 9 winning in both singles and doubles. Against the defending conference champions, the Lumberjacks were able to pull off a narrow 4-3 victory to remain in first place at 8-0 in the Big Sky and remain undefeated at home. Tomasetti and Szavay started off strong for the 'Jacks beating Idaho's Marianna Petrei and Lucia Badillos 6-4. Tomasetti went on to beat freshman Jessica Brzozowska 6-1, 7-5 to clinch the win for the Lumberjacks.
Tomasetti and the Lumberjacks already clinched a spot in the Big Sky Conference tournament and currently sit in first place with three matches left. This weekend, Northern Arizona will compete against both the Montana State Bobcats and the Montana Grizzlies. The Lumberjacks will first face the Bobcats Saturday, April 15 before competing against the Grizzlies the following day. Both matches are set for 9 a.m.
