SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — After an entire day of rain, the Northern Arizona University women's tennis team still competed, clinching a 4-2 win over non-conference opponent San Francisco without playing doubles. The match was originally scheduled for 4 p.m. then moved around to avoid the weather. The Lumberjacks seven-woman squad eventually started play around 3 p.m. and came out with a win before the rain started to pick up again. Northern Arizona is now 3-2 overall this season, winning their last three matches.
"The team fought hard and played to clinch," said Director of Tennis Ki Kroll. "We had to wait for the rain to pass, had a small window to play and were able to pull off the win."
The Lumberjacks did not compete in doubles due to the weather, so they went straight into singles. The 'Jacks won the first two on court one and court two. Hanneke Lodewijks took on USF's freshman Anna Sokiran winning 5-2 before the match was retired. On court two, No. 18 Chiara Tomasetti took on USF's freshman Emily Maxfield winning 6-4, 6-2. With the score 2-0, the USF Dons won the next two, tying it up 2-2 over Brandy Walker and Marta Lewandowska.
Despite coming back to tie it up, the Dons were not able to close the match. NAU won the next two singles matches clinching the win with Blanka Szavay and Eirene Granville, on courts three and six, respectively.
"Both Eirene [Granville] and Blanka [Szavay] came back from losing their first sets to help us get the win," said Kroll. "It was a great team effort, all around."
The Lumberjacks will have a full week of practice before hosting Southern Utah and Portland State in their next conference matches Feb. 25 and Feb. 26, respectively. The 'Jacks will go into their next conference match 1-0 in Big Sky play.
