SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Northern Arizona University women's tennis team competed in their first conference match of the season, besting Sacramento State 4-3 early this afternoon. The Lumberjacks dominated the court winning every match in doubles and only dropping three singles matches to the Hornets. Northern Arizona is now 1-0 in conference and 2-2 overall this season.
"We fought hard to get the win," said Director of Tennis Ki Kroll. "I was extremely proud of how well we competed as a team."
The Lumberjacks are finding a stride in doubles this year winning eight out of 12 matches so far this season. Against Sac State, NAU's doubles pairs included Blanka Szavay and Chiara Tomasetti, Brandy Walker and Hanneke Lodewijks and Marta Lewandowska and Hailey Rochin. Walker and Lodewijks remain undefeated in doubles this season after overcoming Sac State's Carolina Chernyetsky and Andie Mouzes.
"It came down to doubles and the ladies stepped it up, winning all three matches," said Kroll.
Despite NAU's 1-0 advantage going into singles, Sac State stayed in the match trailing behind by one point as the matches continued. The 'Jacks clinched the win on court three when Szavay won 7-5, 6-4 in two sets. Only one court went to three sets, where Lewandowska took on Sofia Wicker in a tough 6-1, 3-6, 4-6 loss.
"Beating a strong team like Sac State at home is a huge accomplishment," said Kroll.
The Lumberjacks are now looking ahead to their next conference matchup where they host Southern Utah and Portland State Feb. 25 and Feb. 26, respectively. This weekend, NAU remains in California to take on San Francisco tomorrow Feb. 19 at 11 a.m. The match was originally scheduled for 4 p.m., but will be moved up due to weather precautions.
