Women’s Tennis Ends Regular Season with 4-3 Win over SUU

CEDAR CITY, Utah – It was a tough match to end the regular season but the Northern Arizona women's tennis team found a way to end the regular season with a 4-3 win on the road over Southern Utah. With the victory, NAU improves to 9-14 this season and 8-2 in the Big Sky Conference.

"It is always tough to win a match on the road but we pulled it out," said head coach Kim Bruno. "We need to work harder and play even tougher when we get to the conference championships."

The doubles point was crucial in today's match and the Lumberjacks were able to come away with the point. NAU got two wins in doubles from the No. 2 and No. 3 courts; the third match did not finish due to NAU clinching but Northern Arizona was up 7-6 on the No. 1 court.  The first win came from the No. 3 duo, Tatum Rochin and Jordan Denesik, as they were able to hand Southern Utah's Madeline Skaras and Sarah Lundin an 8-2 loss to give NAU their first victory on the day.  Clinching the doubles point for the Northern Arizona was Johanna Vang and Sarah Maria Spruch on the No. 2 court as they came away with the 8-6 win over Alex Ivanova and Jane Marushko.

Southern Utah fought back in singles with three wins but NAU was able to grab three wins also in singles to sneak out a 4-3 win over the Thunderbirds. Vang has been one of the best singles players in the Big Sky this season at the No. 1 spot as she earned her second straight win in singles. The native of Sweden took down Alex Ivanova 6-4, 6-2 for Vang's 12th win in singles this season. Vang played her best during conference play as she went 8-2 in the Big Sky.

Spruch won her sixth match in the Big Sky on the No. 6 court over Sarah Lundin. Spruch took the first set 6-1 and then sealed the win in the second set with the 6-4 victory to give NAU the 3-1 lead. Clinching the match for the Lumberjacks in their final regular season match was Denesik on the No. 4 court over Nastia Vasileva. Denesik won her 10th match in singles this season over Vasileva 6-2, 6-3 to give NAU their ninth win on the season.

NAU ends the season winning their last four Big Sky matches and now set their eyes on the Big Sky Championships. After clinching the second seed in the conference, Bruno and her squad will receive a first-round bye to start out the Championships from April 25-27.
