FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – The Northern Arizona women's tennis team battled against the University of Montana in Flagstaff and the Griz were able to come away with a tough 4-3 victory to snap the Lumberjacks three-match winning streak.
"Our team came out today and left everything on the court," said head coach Kim Bruno. "What is disappointing is the match points we left on the court and these are not going to win us Big Sky matches."
Play started today with the Lumberjacks dropping a tough doubles point. Doubles started with Montana's Haley Driver and Precious Gbadamosi were able to defeat Northern Arizona's Emelia Box and Hailey Rochin at No. 1 8-3 to give Montana the early 1-0 lead. Jordan Denesik and Tatum Rochin got NAU on the scoreboard by winning their match at the No. 3 position. Denesik and Rochin were able to defeat Ashley Mackey and Maddy Murray 8-3 to tie it up 1-1 in doubles. Montana's Laurence Peichat and Sasha Carter pulled out a win at the No. 2 spot over Johanna Vang and Sarah Maria Spruch 8-6 to give the Griz the 1-0 lead going into singles.
The Lumberjacks first win of the day came from Spruch when she took down Montana's Murray in a 6-1, 6-1 win for Spruch that tied the match at 1-1. The Griz jumped back on top with a win from Mackey at the No. 5 position over Tatum Rochin 6-2, 6-2.
Hailey Rochin earned her fourth straight win in singles play when she was able to handle Peichat. Rochin was able to win a tough 7-5 first set and the freshman cruised in the second set with a 6-1 victory to take the match. The Griz got another win to go up two on the Lumberjacks when Montana's No. 1 Driver defeated Vang 7-5, 6-2.
To tie it all up at 3-3, Box had a stellar win at No. 2 as she took down Gbadamosi in a tough three-set match. Gbadamosi took the first set 6-3 but Box fought her way back into the match as she took the second set 6-4 and took the match into a third set. The native of England was able to come away with 7-6 (6-0) win in the third set for her third straight win in singles.
The final match left was at the No. 3 position between Carter and Denesik. Denesik took the first set 7-6 (1-0) but Carter fought off multiple match points in the second and third set and was able to come away with the win as she defeated Denesik 7-5 in the second and third set to clinch the win for the Griz.
"This one stings," said Bruno. "We have a rivalry with Montana and I think what the girls can learn from this is that we are right there in the Big Sky."
The Lumberjacks will be back in action tomorrow as they face PAC-12 opponent Oregon with play beginning at 10 a.m. in Tempe.
