FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – The Northern Arizona women's tennis team will play its first home match of the season this Friday, as they face Big Sky opponent Montana State for the squad's conference opener. This is the earliest the Lumberjacks have faced a conference opponent in a season since 2003. The Lumberjacks and the Bobcats faced each other to open last year's Big Sky Championships and NAU defeated MSU 4-1, ending the Bobcats' season. After Friday's matchup with Montana State, the Lumberjacks will head out on the road to face New Mexico on Super Bowl Sunday. Northern Arizona defeated New Mexico last year, 5-2 in Albuquerque.
Coach Bruno Quote of the Week
"Montana State is always one of the toughest teams in the Big Sky," said head coach Kim Bruno. "Hopefully the experience we have gained over these past two weeks will pay off and we will be ready to go. New Mexico is a deep team with good coaching but if our confidence level picks up, I think anything is possible."
Top returners for the Lumberjacks, junior Johanna Vang and Tatum Rochin are undefeated in doubles play this season with two wins over Arizona State and the University of Arizona. They have defeated their opponents by a combined score of 12-4. Vang and Rochin are coming off a win at Arizona defeating the Wildcats' Shayne Austin and Lauren Marker, 6-1.
Big Sky Opener
This will be the first Big Sky match for Northern Arizona as it faces Montana State who was picked to finish sixth in the preseason poll. The Lumberjacks were picked to finish third after a 17-10 2013 season and a third place finish in the Big Sky.
Home Sweet Home
Friday's match will be the first home match of the season for the Lumberjacks and the first match for the four newcomers on this year's squad. Freshmen Hailey Rochin and Olivia Headford, sophomore Emelia Box and junior Sarah Maria Spruch will be playing the first ever match in Flagstaff. Last season, the Lumberjacks were undefeated at home with a 7-0 record.
