NAU Athletics Wins Back-to-Back Big Sky Presidents’ Cup
OGDEN, Utah – For the second straight year, Northern Arizona Athletics has captured the Big Sky Presidents’ Cup presented by Red Lion Hotels. NAU finished first in overall in athletic points for the second consecutive year, in addition to claiming the Big Sky Men’s and Women’s All-Sports Trophies in May.

NAU Places 41 Student-Athletes on Big Sky Spring All-Academic
OGDEN, Utah – The Northern Arizona men’s and women’s outdoor track & field, men’s and women’s tennis and golf teams placed a total of 41 student-athletes on the spring 2014 Big Sky All-Academic Teams as recognized by the conference office on Wednesday.

NAU Captures Men’s and Women’s Big Sky All-Sports Trophy
OGDEN, Utah – Northern Arizona has captured both the men’s and women’s Big Sky All-Sports Trophies, the conference office announced Monday. The Lumberjacks went into the outdoor track championship with the lead, and a sweep by the men’s and women’s teams this past weekend secured NAU the win on both sides. The sweep is the first true sweep by any school since 2000-01.

Women’s Tennis and Swimming & Diving Rank in Top 10 Percent
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Northern Arizona women’s tennis and swimming & diving were both honored by the NCAA for earning Public Recognition Awards, based on their most recent multi-year Academic Progress Rate. These awards are given each year to teams with APRs in the top 10 percent in each sport. This is the second straight year women’s tennis has received the honor.

Forty-Three Student-Athletes to Receive Degrees This Weekend
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Forty-three Northern Arizona student-athletes will receive their degrees from the university this weekend as part of the Spring 2014 commencement ceremonies. When adding in the 15 student-athletes who participated in the Fall 2013 commencement ceremonies, the NAU Athletics Department produced a total of 58 graduates for the 2013-14 academic year.

2014 Women’s Tennis Season Recap
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – The 2013-14 Northern Arizona women’s tennis team continued to improve throughout each match this season and the Lumberjacks proved to be one of the top teams in the Big Sky Conference. The Lumberjacks ended the 2014 season with a 9-15 overall record and an impressive 8-2 record in the conference.

NAU Breaks Ground for New North Campus Athletics & Rec Center
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Wednesday was a huge day for NAU Athletics as Northern Arizona University held the groundbreaking ceremonies for the new North Campus Athletics & Recreation Center (NC ARC). The facility will be the new home of the NAU swimming & diving and tennis programs and will also enhance the student recreational life experience in addition to further serving the Flagstaff community.

Vang Named First Team & Rochin to Honorable Mention
OGDEN, Utah – Head coach Kim Bruno, of the Northern Arizona women’s tennis team, had to replace a lot of key players from the 2013 squad. She looked to some key returners to lead the 2014 squad, while also looking incoming players to step up. Bruno got both this season as top returner Johanna Vang was named to the First Team All-Big Sky and freshman Hailey Rochin earned Honorable Mention.

Women’s Tennis Faces Defending Champs in Big Sky Championships

Jacobsen, Smith Named Golden Eagle Top Scholar-Athletes
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – The Northern Arizona University Athletics Department held its 36th annual Golden Eagle Awards Tuesday at the High Country Conference Center to recognize its student-athletes for their stellar work in the classroom. Golden Eagle Distributors, Inc., honored 199 Lumberjack student-athletes for their scholastic and athletic accomplishments. The award recognizes student-athletes who maintain at least a 3.0 grade point average.

Hailey Rochin was a key contributor as she went unbeaten in singles play this weekend and helped NAU clinch a spot in this year’s Big Sky Championships and as a result, Rochin has been named this week’s Big Sky Player of the Week.

SPOKANE, Wash. – The Northern Arizona women’s tennis team played its second match this week traveling to the Pacific Northwest to face Gonzaga University who earned its first ever ITA ranking. The Bulldogs went into the match ranked as the 72nd best team in the nation and all throughout the match, the Lumberjacks competed against Gonzaga but the Bulldogs pulled out the 5-2 win over the Lumberjacks.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The Northern Arizona women’s tennis had a big win over Big Sky opponent Montana State for their first win of the season overcoming sickness and injury throughout the team. On Sunday against a tough University of New Mexico squad and the Lumberjacks were not able to overcome those challenges and fell to the Lobos 7-0.

PHOENIX, Ariz. – In their first Big Sky Conference match of the season, the Northern Arizona women’s tennis team was able to pick up its first win of the season against Montana State 5-2. The match was played at the Anthem Community Center after being moved twice due to weather conditions in Flagstaff and Sedona.

Women’s Tennis Hosts Montana State in Big Sky Opener
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – The Northern Arizona women’s tennis team will play its first home match of the season this Friday, as they face Big Sky opponent Montana State for the squad’s conference opener. This is the earliest the Lumberjacks have faced a conference opponent in a season since 2003. The Lumberjacks and the Bobcats faced each other to open last year’s Big Sky Championships and NAU defeated MSU 4-1, ending the Bobcat’s season. After Friday’s matchup with Montana State, the Lumberjacks will head out on the road to face New Mexico on Super Bowl Sunday. Northern Arizona defeated New Mexico last year, 5-2 in Albuquerque.

Vang & Rochin Earn Second Straight Doubles Win in Loss to UofA
TUCSON, Ariz. – For the second straight week, Northern Arizona’s junior Johanna Vang and senior Tatum Rochin picked up their second straight win in doubles play defeating Shayne Austin and Lauren Marker from the University of Arizona. The rest of the Lumberjacks were not able to fair as well as NAU was defeated by the Wildcats, 7-0, who came into today’s match ranked No. 73 in the nation.

Women’s Tennis Heads Down to Tucson to Face UofA
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – After facing Arizona State last weekend down in Tempe, the Northern Arizona women’s tennis team will now travel to face another in-state opponent this weekend in the University of Arizona. This will be just the third match this season for the Lumberjacks as they played a double header last weekend against ASU. Senior Tatum Rochin and junior Johanna Vang were the only players to pick up a win in doubles or singles last week as the duo defeated Ebony Panoho and Joanna Smith from ASU.

NAU Athletics Hosts 2nd Annual National Girls & Women in Sports Day
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – The Northern Arizona athletics department will once again celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day for the second consecutive year with a celebration that will stretch over two weekends in February. The celebration will begin on Saturday, Feb. 8, with a Youth Sports Symposium in conjunction with the NAU men’s basketball game against Southern Utah that night and will continue the following weekend with a meet and greet and halftime recognition at the NAU women’s basketball game against Eastern Washington. The clinic on Feb. 8 is open to all youth, both boys and girls, in 1st-8th grade and requires pre-registration.

Women’s Tennis' Box Earns Mountain Region Ranking
SKILLMAN, N.J. – In just her first fall season at Northern Arizona, women’s tennis sophomore transfer Emelia Box earned a spot on the ITA Mountain Region Ranking. Box was ranked 20th in the Mountain Region among the best players and schools in the Mountain West such as UNLV, Utah, Wyoming and New Mexico.

Denesik & Vang Shine at New Mexico State Fall Invite
Las Cruces, N.M. – Six members of the Northern Arizona women’s tennis program began their fall season this past weekend at the New Mexico State Fall Invite and came away with impressive results. Out of the six players that participated, four of the six Lumberjacks came away this weekend with winning records in singles play. Sophomore Jordan Denesik played stellar in the Taos Flight going 3-0 in singles play defeating Anastasiya Sylenko from UTEP, Ansley Boarman from Abilene Christian and Matilda Tench from UTEP. Denesik and junior newcomer Sarah Spruch went 2-2 in the Laguna Flight doubles draw defeating Western New Mexico’s Claudia Osuna and Dena Irvin 8-1 on day one of the invite.

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - The Northern Arizona women’s tennis team will start its fall season this weekend at the New Mexico State Fall Invite in Las Cruces, N.M. starting on Friday, Sept. 13. Only three players return from last year’s team, who had one of the best seasons in Northern Arizona women’s tennis history.
