Women's Tennis Perfect in Home Doubleheader Sweep

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – The Northern Arizona women's tennis team waited nearly two months to finally play on its home court and they took full advantage of its home-opening doubleheader making quick work of Portland State and Valparaiso. The Lumberjacks did not drop a match in either contest as they cruised to a pair of 7-0 sweeps at Continental Country Club to open their seven-match home schedule on Sunday.

"Anytime we can bring home two 7-0 wins back-to-back is an accomplishment for our program," said director of tennis Kim Bruno. "For us to come out and take care of them and get that first win against Portland State which is a much improved team from last year to start off the day was great. Then to finish off with another good Division I win was what we need to do at home."

In their first half of their Sunday doubleheader, the Lumberjacks came out on fire following a pair of losses a week ago. Behind a doubles sweep in which it did not drop more than three games in any of the three matches, NAU took a 1-0 lead over Portland State despite windy playing conditions.

Sophomore Hannah Stone began singles play with a win at No. 1 and was then followed by seniors Alice Pacaut and Ghizelene Doballah as the pair won their respective matches at No. 5 and 2 to clinch the team score at 4-0. The remaining singles matches would fall in the Lumberjacks' favor as well as NAU wrapped up its second perfect conference win of the season after it swept all nine matches in its 7-0 win at Northern Colorado on Feb. 24.

The Lumberjacks repeated their morning performance in their afternoon session as they welcomed Valparaiso to Flagstaff for the first all-time meeting between the two schools. Doubles play followed the same morning script as the three Lumberjack duos each won their respective matches to carry a 1-0 lead into singles play. As dominant as NAU was in singles play against Portland State, it was even more so against Valparaiso. The Lumberjacks went six-for-six against the Crusaders and it won 10 of the 12 sets by either a 6-0 or 6-1 margin.

Stone, Doballah, Pacaut as well as seniors Nicole Perez and Malia Wahinepio all won both of their singles matches while sophomore Johanna Vang (versus Portland State) and junior Tatum Rochin (versus Valparaiso) each won one.

Following Sunday's doubleheader sweep, Perez is the first Lumberjack to reach double-digit singles victories as she improved to a team-best 10-6 with Pacaut just behind at 9-7. Pacaut and Wahinepio have now won 10 of their last 11 matches at No. 3 doubles and are now owners of an 11-3 doubles record.

The Lumberjacks (8-8 overall, 2-1 in the Big Sky) will embark on their second to final road trip of the regular season this upcoming weekend. They will play at St. Cloud State on Friday and then will make the trip to North Dakota for their fourth conference match of the spring on Saturday before wrapping up the regular season with five of their final seven matches at home.
