Women's Tennis Blanks Weber State for Second BSC Win
OGDEN, Utah – The Northern Arizona women's team bounced back in impressive fashion from its loss to Arizona State with a 7-0 sweep of Weber State on Saturday. Just as the Sun Devils did to them a day earlier, the Lumberjacks blanked the Wildcats for their second conference win of the season, pushing their record to 2-0 in the Big Sky and 3-5 overall.
"We knew we had this in us," said director of tennis Kim Bruno. "We were the team that had the courage today and we stepped up. We were relentless. It was a well-deserved win for this team because this is what we've been trying to accomplish the last couple of matches."
For the first time in five matches, the Lumberjacks headed into singles play with the critical 1-0 lead by taking all three doubles matches for the first time this season. It was a reversal of fortune for NAU after dropping the doubles point in their last four matches, going just 1-11 in doubles play during that span.
Juniors Malia Wahinepio and Nicole Perez along with freshman Johanna Vang each claimed wins at the No. 3, 4 and 5 singles spots in straight sets, clinching the match for the Lumberjacks. NAU would proceed to take the remaining three matches in three sets despite losing the first set in each match. The six singles wins coupled with wins each of the three doubles spots gave the Lumberjacks their first sweep of the season.
"If you look at the scores, a lot of the matches was close; the doubles matches were close," Bruno said. "The match could've gone either way so it was a really good win for us."
The win puts the Lumberjacks at the top of the Big Sky standings after Saturday's play as they're the only team with two conference wins early in the season. They'll aim to keep their conference record unblemished with their final match of the weekend on Sunday at Idaho State. Play is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. at the Reed Gym Indoor Courts in Pocatello, Idaho.
