Perez Begins ASU Tourney with Singles Victory
TEMPE, Ariz. – Two members of the Northern Arizona women's tennis team headed down to Tempe for the ASU Thunderbird Invitational and battled through an afternoon dust storm for one singles victory on the first day of competition. Junior Nicole Perez knocked off Ohio State's Kelsey Becker in three sets, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 for the only Lumberjack victory on Friday.
Doubles action kicked off the tournament with Perez and freshman Hannah Stone forming the Lumberjack pair, but they were done in by San Diego's Anna Depenau and Maja Sujica, 8-5. Stone also dropped her singles match to Stephany Chang of Cal in straight sets, 7-5, 6-1.
In addition to the ASU Thunderbird Invite, the Lumberjacks are also competing in Irvine, Calif. at the UC Irvine Fall Invitational. However due to the rain, competition was postponed for the day with play to resume on Saturday. Day 2 of the Thunderbird Invite will also continue tomorrow.
