SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The Northern Arizona women's tennis team garnered two singles wins and two doubles win on the first day of the Gaucho Classic on Friday. Freshmen Johanna Vang and Hannah Stone both advanced to the semifinals in the singles draw C after impressive victories over the top-two seeded players in the bracket.
Vang knocked off top-seeded Erica Cano of the host school UC Santa Barbara in three sets, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4. Stone then went on to impressively defeat second-seeded Shelby Sinoway of Cal State Northridge in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0. Juniors Malia Wahinepio and Ghizelene Doballah both lost their respective singles matches to UC Santa Barbara's Kiersten Meehan and Wyoming's Alexandra Kovacs respectively.
The two Lumberjack doubles teams also won on Friday. Wahinepio and Vang defeated Anna Yang and Nigora Sirojiddinova of Cal State Northridge, 9-7 and Stone and Doballah took down Cano and Stacy Yam of UC Santa Barbara, 8-4.
The Lumberjacks continue play at the Gaucho Classic tomorrow.
