OGDEN, Utah – For the third time this season and the fifth time in her outstanding career, senior Edit Suhajda has been named the Big Sky women's tennis Player of the Week, the conference announced Wednesday. Northern Arizona received five of 13 Big Sky women's tennis Player of the Week awards this season, with senior Orsi Golovics and sophomore Malia Wahinepio also garnering the honor during the spring season.
Last weekend on the road in Montana, Suhajda led the Lumberjacks to 4-3 wins over both Montana and Montana State to give NAU the second seed in the Big Sky championship. As the exclusive No. 1 singles player for the Lumberjacks this season, Suhajda recorded a 6-0, 6-0 sweep of Montana's Rebecca Bran in Saturday's NAU victory over the Grizzlies. Despite dropping her No. 1 singles match against Montana State, Suhajda finished the regular season with nine wins at No. 1 singles, including four Big Sky victories.
The Budapest, Hungary native also added a pair of wins at No. 1 doubles over the weekend playing with Golovics. The tandem notched an 8-2 win against Montana and posted an 8-6 victory against Montana State, helping NAU clinch the critical doubles point against the Bobcats. Suhajda and Golovics finished the regular season with a stellar 12-3 record at No. 1 doubles while going 6-1 in Big Sky matches.
The Lumberjacks will face Montana in the Big Sky championship semifinals on Saturday in Bozeman, Mont.
