Women’s Tennis Gets Rained-Shortened Win over Idaho State
GLENDALE, Ariz. – With rain forecasted throughout the afternoon, Northern Arizona's 8 a.m. match against Idaho State in Glendale was shortened to only singles play, with the Lumberjacks recording a 5-1 conference victory. NAU was also slated to play Rhode Island on Monday, but that match was washed away by the rain. The Lumberjacks moved to 2-0 in Big Sky play and 7-6 overall while Idaho State fell to 1-4 overall and 0-2 in conference.
The Lumberjacks began their windy and wet morning with a win from senior Aimee Oki at No. 6 singles, 6-1, 6-0. Fellow senior Yumi Hasegawa eased her way to a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 4, while sophomore Nicole Perez earned a 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 5. The most competitive matches came at the top-three singles positions, with senior Orsi Golovics at No. 2 and sophomore Malia Wahinepio at No. 3 outlasting their Bengal opponents, 7-5, 6-4 and 6-4, 6-4, respectively. The final match to end would be Idaho State's lone win, as NAU senior Edit Suhajda was outlasted by ISU's Katharina Marsela, 3-6, 6-3, 7-5.
Northern Arizona will play three road matches this weekend, starting with a tilt against Nevada on Saturday.
