OGDEN, Utah – Northern Arizona sophomore Malia Wahinepio has been named Big Sky women's tennis Player of the Week, the conference announced Wednesday. NAU has now received four-of-seven Big Sky Player of the Week awards this season, with Wahinepio earning her first honor of the year. Senior Edit Suhajda has been named Player of the Week twice this season and senior Orsi Golovics has also earned the award.
Wahinepio led the Lumberjacks to a 7-0 sweep of Weber State on Saturday in NAU's home and conference opener. The sophomore from Anthem, Ariz. posted a perfect 6-0, 6-0 victory over Weber State's Michelle Warwick at No. 3 singles while teaming with senior Yumi Hasegawa for an 8-2 victory at No. 2 doubles. Wahinepio extended her singles winning streak to six matches, increasing her team-best singles record to 8-4 on the season, while also improving to 7-2 in doubles for the year with Hasegawa. She was an All-Big Sky second team selection as a freshman in 2010 and has moved up to No. 3 singles this season.
Wahinepio and the Lumberacks will be back in action on Monday, March 21, with a double header against Idaho State and Rhode Island in Glendale.
