Suhajda Named Big Sky Women’s Tennis Player of the Week
OGDEN, Utah – Northern Arizona senior Edit Suhajda has been named Big Sky women's tennis Player of the Week after leading NAU to three 7-0 sweeps last weekend, the conference announced Wednesday. Suhajda went 3-0 at both No. 1 singles and doubles, pacing a perfect three-match set for the Lumberjacks in Las Cruces, N.M. The award is the second of the season for Suhajda and the third for the NAU women's tennis team in 2011.
Suhajda did not drop a set in three No. 1 singles matches over the weekend and was forced to a seventh game only once. She began play on Saturday morning with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Seattle's Katrina Schwab and added a 6-1, 6-0 win over Doris Berberic of Western New Mexico on Saturday night. On Sunday against home-standing New Mexico State, the Budapest, Hungary native notched a 7-5, 6-4 win over Manon Sylvain to complete a perfect weekend of singles play at the top position.
Teaming with fellow senior Orsi Golovics at No. 1 doubles, Suhajda was perfect in three doubles matches as well. The Hungarian duo opened with an 8-7 (3) win against Seattle, added an 8-0 blanking of Western New Mexico, and closed with an 8-4 win versus New Mexico State. With her outstanding weekend of play, Suhajda evened her season singles record at 5-5 and is now 5-2 with Golovics at the top doubles position. She holds the No. 20 singles ranking in the ITA Mountain region.
The Lumberjacks return to action on Sunday with a 10 a.m. match at New Mexico.
