Women’s Tennis to Play Three Weekend Matches in Santa Barbara

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – After splitting their opening weekend with a loss to No. 49 Arizona and a win over UTEP in Tucson, Northern Arizona makes its farthest road trip of the non-conference season as the Lumberjacks head to the central California coast for three matches in Santa Barbara. NAU will face Cal State Bakersfield on Friday, Santa Clara on Saturday, and UC Santa Barbara on Sunday.

The Lumberjacks are 1-1 after their season-opening weekend, falling to No. 49 Arizona, 7-0, and topping UTEP, 4-3. NAU senior Edit Suhajda was named Big Sky women's tennis Player of the Week after winning at No. 1 singles and No. 3 doubles to lead NAU past UTEP. The Lumberjacks also got singles wins against the Miners from senior Orsi Golovics at No. 2, senior Yumi Hasegawa at No. 3, and sophomore Malia Wahinepio at No. 4 for their first win of the season and just their second victory over UTEP since 1995.

Cal State Bakersfield is 0-2 after 7-0 road losses to San Francisco and Santa Clara. Sophomore Julian Mannix, who is from Santa Barbara, has played at No. 1 singles and doubles thus far for the Roadrunners with junior Veronica Dimas playing at No. 2. CSU Bakersfield has lost all-12 of its singles matches so far this season, with 11 losses in straight sets. NAU and CSUB have only met once before in women's tennis, a 5-4 win for the Roadrunners in 1991.

Conversely, Santa Clara begins the week at 2-0 with 7-0 home wins over Division-III UC Santa Cruz and the aforementioned whitewash of Cal State Bakersfield. Freshman Katie Le has started the season at No. 1 singles and doubles and has a pair of 6-1, 6-0 victories. The Broncos will face UC Santa Barbara on Friday before battling the Lumberjacks. NAU is 2-4 all-time against Santa Clara, with the Broncos scoring a 4-3 win the last time the schools met in 2009.

Northern Arizona will close its weekend against UC Santa Barbara, which will play its first Spring match against Santa Clara on Friday. 2010 All-Big West first team selection Sophia Novak returns to lead the Gauchos at No. 1 singles. The Lumberjacks are 2-4 all-time against UCSB but recorded a 4-3 neutral-site win over the Gauchos to open their 2010 season.

DID YOU KNOW…Overall, 26 student-athletes earned a 4.0 GPA for the 2010 spring semester, representing all 15 squads. The soccer team led the department with seven student-athletes with a 4.0 GPA for the semester.
