Suhajda Advances to Third Round After Day One of ITA Regional

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Northern Arizona senior Edit Suhajda received a first-round bye and won her second round match to advance to the third round of singles play after the first day of the USTA/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Mountain Region Championships in Las Vegas. NAU is one of 18 schools participating in the event with more than 110 athletes competing to advance to the ITA national championship.

Suhajda was the only Lumberjack to receive a first round bye due to a No. 15 opening seed. In the second round, the Budapest, Hungary native faced Aodhnait Lombard of Nevada, scoring a 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 win to advance to the round of 32.

The Lumberjacks also picked up a pair of wins in the first round. Fellow senior Orsi Golovics notched a 6-0, 6-4 win over Weber State's Michelle Warwick before dropping a 6-3, 7-5 decision in the second round. Sophomore Malia Wahinepio rallied for a 2-6, 6-0, 6-1 win over Carly Van Hollen of Wyoming in the first round but was also eliminated in the second round.

Thursday's slate in Las Vegas features the first-two rounds of doubles play and singles play in the round of 32.
