LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Northern Arizona senior Edit Suhajda won a third round singles match on Thursday and teamed with senior Yumi Hasegawa to advance to the third round of doubles play to highlight Northern Arizona play on the second day of the USTA/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Mountain Region Championships in Las Vegas.
Suhajda, the only Lumberjack to advance to Friday in the singles main draw, faced Isabella Kulaif of New Mexico State in the round of 32. The Budapest, Hungary native recorded a 6-2, 6-0 victory to advance to the round of 16 on Friday, where she will face New Mexico's Michaela Bezdickova.
Doubles play began on Thursday, and in the first round NAU senior Orsi Golovics and sophomore Malia Wahinepio notched an 8-6 victory over Monica Abella and Kimberly Watts of Utah State while Hasegawa and Suhajda had a bye. In the second round, Golovics and Wahinepio dropped a close 9-8 decision to a duo from New Mexico while Hasegawa and Suhajda advanced with an 8-6 win over Lais Ogata and Emma Verberne of Nevada.
Friday's schedule kicks off with doubles play at 9 a.m., followed by singles round of 16 play at 10:30 and singles quarterfinals at 1:30 p.m.
