Womens Tennis Continues Strong Play at Southwest Invitational
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Northern Arizona won five more singles
matches and added three doubles wins to continue its impressive
play at the Southwest Collegiate Invitational in Albuquerque. The
University of New Mexico-hosted weekend tournament will conclude on
Sunday.
After recording two victories in her first singles action of the
season on Friday, junior Edit Suhajda remained perfect for the
weekend with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Oregon’s Sabine Fuchs.
Freshman Nicole Perez also claimed a victory over a player from
Oregon, while junior Aimee Oki and freshman Malia Wahinepio
recorded straight-set wins over opponents from UTEP. Freshman Ana
Mendes rounded out the victorious Lumberjacks on Saturday with a
6-2, 6-3 win over Western New Mexico’s Emily Lampman.
Head coach Kim Bruno shuffled her doubles teams on Saturday but
continued to get great results. Perez played with junior Yumi
Hasegawa and tallied an 8-4 win over a pair from the host New
Mexico Lobos. Oki and Wahinepio teamed for an 8-3 win against
Alexandra Glebova and Ximena Fuentes of UTEP while Suhajda and
junior Orsi Golovics were also victorious over a pair from
UTEP.
Play concludes on Sunday with more doubles and singles play in
Albuquerque.
