Women’s Tennis Powers Through Opening Day at Southwest Invite

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Northern Arizona posted a combined 9-4 singles record and 2-1 doubles record for an impressive showing on the first day of the Southwest Collegiate Invitational in Albuquerque. Northern Arizona and host New Mexico are being joined in the weekend tournament by players from Arizona, Oregon, UTEP and Division-II Western New Mexico.

Junior Orsi Golovics won her lone match of the day in a 6-1, 7-5 win over Oregon’s Trudie du Toit to advance in the main draw. Posting a pair of wins on Friday was junior Edit Suhajda, who won twice in her first singles action of the Fall, and freshman Malia Wahinepio. Juniors Aimee Oki and Yumi Hasegawa and freshmen Nicole Perez and Ana Mendes each went 1-1 on Friday, as all seven NAU players claimed at least one singles victory.

In doubles play, Hasegawa and Oki paired for an 8-4 win over a pair from UTEP. Also victorious was the duo of Golovics and Wahinepio in an 8-6 win over Pavlina Smatova and Emmanuelle Cor from Oregon.

Action resumes on Saturday morning in Albuquerque.
