Womens Tennis Opens Week With 7-0 Win Over Western New Mexico
LAS CRUCES, N.M. – In their second-consecutive match
against Division-II opposition, Northern Arizona again made quick
work of their opponent, this time sweeping Western New Mexico, 7-0,
on Thursday night in Las Cruces, N.M. Playing on the first of
four-consecutive days with matches, NAU won its fourth-straight
match to improve to 5-2 while Western New Mexico moved to 2-3.
Much like in their 7-0 triumph over Division-II Grand Canyon last
Sunday, the Lumberjacks opened Thursdays match by dominating the
doubles point. An 8-0 win for juniors Yumi Hasegawa and Edit
Suhajda at No. 3, paired with 8-3 and 8-1 wins at No. 1 and 2,
respectively, gave Northern Arizona the early advantage.
The Lumberjacks would be just as dominated in singles, winning
every set and only losing a total of 13 games in sweeping all-six
matches. At No. 2, Suhajda recorded a perfect match, defeating the
Mustangs’ Stephanie Shelton, 6-0, 6-0. Freshman Malia
Wahinepio came close to perfection with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 4, as
did freshman Nicole Perez at No. 5 in a 6-1, 6-0 decision. The
closest match came at No. 1, where Western New Mexico’s
Nikolina Vukadin battled Lumberjack junior Orsi Golovics in a 6-3,
6-2 victory for NAU.
The Lumberjacks continue their long weekend in El Paso for their
next-two matches, facing UTEP on Friday at 1:00 p.m.
