Womens Tennis Winning Streak Ended by UTEP, 5-2
EL PASO, Texas – Northern Arizona got singles wins from
freshman Nicole Perez and junior Yumi Hasegawa, but UTEP won
singles matches at positions one through four and took the doubles
point to claim a 5-2 victory. The loss ended a four-match winning
streak for NAU and dropped the Lumberjacks to 5-3 while UTEP won
its seventh-straight match to improve to 7-4.
The Lumberjacks picked up a doubles win at No. 2 from Perez and
junior Aimee Oki as the duo got past UTEP’s Ximena Fuentes
and Alexandra Glebova, 8-4. An 8-5 win for the Miners at No. 3 left
the doubles point up to the No.1 match, where junior Orsi Golovics
and freshman Malia Wahinepio were outlasted, 9-7, to give UTEP the
early lead.
Singles play was closely contested as well, with three matches
going to three sets. Hasegawa rallied for a 4-6, 6-1, 7-5 win for
her fifth-consecutive victory at No. 6 while Perez cruised to a
6-3, 6-1 win over Fuentes at No. 5. Wahinepio pushed Glebova to
three sets at No. 4 before falling 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 to end the
Lumberjack freshman’s six-match winning streak. Junior Edit
Suhajda forced a third set as well, at No. 2, but was outlasted by
Carolina DeLuca, 6-1, 6-7 (4), 6-4. Straight-set wins for the
Miners at No. 1 and 3 ensured the seventh-consecutive victory for
the home team.
Northern Arizona remains in El Paso to face Texas-Pan American on
Saturday at 9 a.m.
