Womens Tennis Claims Big Sky Win at Northern Colorado, 5-2
GREELEY, Colo. – Northern Arizona opened Big Sky play by
sweeping doubles and winning four singles matches to top Northern
Colorado, 5-2, Saturday afternoon in Greeley. The Lumberjacks ended
a brief two-match losing streak to improve to 2-2 while Northern
Colorado dropped to 1-1.
NAU opened the day with the doubles point, including an 8-2 win at
No. 1 for the No. 35-ranked doubles team of junior Orsi Golovics
and freshman Malia Wahinepio. Combined with an 8-3 win at No. 3,
Northern Arizona dominated doubles play to take the first point of
the match.
In singles, junior Edit Suhajda played at No. 2 for the first time
this season and cruised past Northern Colorado’s Tiffany
Knop, 6-0, 6-3. Junior Aimee Oki won, 6-4, 6-1 at No. 3, while
Wahinepio won her third-consecutive match with a 6-3, 6-3 triumph
at No. 4. The Lumberjacks also got a straight-set win from junior
Yumi Hasegawa at No. 6 to even their season record and open
conference play with a road victory.
After playing their first-four matches of the season away from
Flagstaff, Northern Arizona will play a pair of home matches next
week, beginning with a Big Sky-dual against Montana State on Friday
at 1 p.m. at Flagstaff Athletic Club East.
