Women’s Tennis Defeated in Big Sky Championship Final
SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Northern
Arizona women’s tennis reached the Big Sky Championship final
for the fourth straight year, but dropped a 4-0 decision to No. 56
Sacramento State. The Lumberjacks finished the 2009 year 13-10
overall and 6-2 in the conference.
Sacramento State (19-8, 8-0 BSC) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead
picking up doubles wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. The
Hornets added three singles wins at No. 1, No. 5, and No. 6
securing the victory.
The Lumberjacks pushed Sacramento State throughout the match
leading No. 3 doubles and No. 2 singles. Stacey Pinchbeck and Yumi
Hasegawa led the Hornets’ Luba Schifris and Aileen Tsan 6-4
while Orsi Golovics was up a set on Melissa Valenzuela 6-4,
0-3.
The NAU women finished third in the Big Sky regular season
standings, but finished second in the Big Sky postseason tournament
for the third consecutive year.
