DENVER, Colo. – With their first academic years behind them at Northern Arizona University, five members from the Lumberjack swimming & diving program were honored as All-Academic honorees by the Western Athletic Conference on Tuesday. Hayley Edmond, Logan Neal, Andrea Schmidt, Amanda Sumrow and Sarah Takach's additions bring NAU's total up to 21 WAC All-Academic performers for the 2015-16 season.
Student-athletes are eligible for All-Academic awards from the conference after completing at least one year at their institution, carry at least a 3.2 cumulative grade point average and participate in at least 50 percent of their team's contests. In April, NAU placed a league-high tying 16 student-athletes on the Winter All-Academic teams.
All five of the Lumberjacks' most recent honorees easily eclipsed the minimum GPA requirements exhibiting excellent academic acumen during their first years. All five made the successful transition to NAU by finishing the year with grade point averages upward of 3.75. Edmond – the lone non-freshman in the group after transferring from Massey University in her home country of New Zealand – and Neal both tallied perfect 4.00 cumulative GPAs.
The news comes on the heels of NAU receiving the Scholar All-America Team award from the College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association of America last week. The 'Jacks finished the spring semester with a 3.44 team grade point average and the team's cumulative GPA stands at 3.54.
