Swimming Takes to the Pool in Phoenix on Saturday

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – With the WAC Championships are just over a month away, the Northern Arizona swimming team will have the opportunity to size up two of their conference foes, Grand Canyon and New Mexico State, this Saturday in an exhibition style meet. The meet will start at 1 p.m. at Phoenix Swim Club's Dottie Boreyko/Brophy Sports Campus in Phoenix.

"We will like we've had two going on three good weeks since we left Tucson," said head coach Andy Johns. "We'll be looking for a good comparison of where we were on Jan. 3 and we are now on Jan. 25. We are using these meets to see what our scoring squad will look like at the conference meet and we just want to continue to get our team racing experience."

The Lumberjacks have not competed since their double-dual against Arizona and Oregon State on Jan. 3 in Tucson. With the Lumberjacks already defeating New Mexico State, 171-129, on Dec. 7 and their upcoming home meet versus Grand Canyon on Feb. 8, Saturday's meet will not be scored but will provide the NAU swimmers with an opportunity to improve on their qualifying and seeding times for the WAC Championship meet along side swimmers they will see in San Antonio at the end of February.

"It will be good conference opponents," Johns said. "We've seen a lot of New Mexico State, but getting our first good look at Grand Canyon will help us two weeks from now at home. It adds an extra level of intensity when you swim against conference opponents who you know you will see again and that's what we have in front of us."

The Lumberjacks enter the week with 24 top-10 times in the conference led by four each from senior Rachel Palmer and junior Caitlin Wright. Seniors Emma Lowther and Stirling Smith, junior Alexis Juergens, sophomore Kendall Brown and freshman Jori Lindquist all have multiple top-10 times as well. NAU has been particularly strong in the 1,000 freestyle where Brown (10:12.20), Lowther (10:16.06) and Wright (10:23.79) are first, second and fourth respectively. In all, NAU owns multiple top-10 times in the WAC in nine events.

When extended to the top-20 fastest times in each event, the Lumberjacks have 18 different swimmers represented among the top times in the WAC.

The NAU divers will not compete in the meet on Saturday but will make the trip south to train for the Air Force Diving Invitational next week.
