FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – NAU's swimmers will open 2012-13 competition at 2 p.m. Friday in the 17th annual Pentathlon in Wall Aquatic Center, the first of two intersquad meets the team will hold in preparation for its season opener with Arizona State on Oct. 13. The 24 Lumberjack swimmers on the 2012-13 roster will compete in the 200 Individual Medley as well as 100 meter races in the butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, and free style.
The six divers on the 2012-13 NAU squad will have their first competition in the team's second intersquad event, the Blue-Gold meet on Oct. 12.
"The Pentathlon is really a good event for our returners to objectively see where they are compared to years past and for the newcomers it's their first real chance to race," 17th year head coach Andy Johns said. "For us we also might find out something about somebody that we didn't know. It's really a good way to start racing and it's a tough, physically demanding event with five races in about an hour."
There will be four heats of six racers for each event, as all 24 swimmers on the roster will compete in each event. Nine newcomers as well as redshirt freshman Alex Huff will see their first NAU action in the event while 14 returning letter winners will look to build off the team's second place finish at the WAC Championships last season.
The Lumberjacks return their quartet of CollegeSwimming.com Mid-Major All-Americans from 2012 in senior Fi Connell and juniors Jordan Burnes, Emma Lowther, and Rachel Palmer. The four combined for four WAC titles and 11 NCAA 'B' times last season and collectively hold seven individual school records and one relay record. Sophomore Caitlin Wright also returns after being named the 2011-12 NAU Female Newcomer of the Year as the deep Lumberjack roster looks to claim the program's first conference title since the 1997-98 season.
Admission for Friday's Pentathlon is free for all fans.
