NAU Diving Sends All Six to NCAA Zone Championships

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Northern Arizona diving team travels east for the 2011 NCAA Zone E Regional Diving Championships this week.  Six Lumberjack divers will compete on the 1-meter and 3-meter springboards with an opportunity to qualify for the NCAA Championships.

The Lumberjacks finished up a strong combined team season with a top three finish at the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Championships two weeks ago.  NAU improved upon a fifth-place finish at the 2010 WAC Championships setting six school records in the process.

The diving team put up five top eight finishes during competition on the 1-meter and 3-meter springboards and platform.  The Lumberjack divers contributed in the team scoring with five top 16 finishes on both springboards and three on platform.

Senior Lana Christensen collected a bronze medal on 3-meter, the top finish for the Lumberjacks during the championships meet.

The Lumberjacks will be represented at the NCAA Zone Regionals by Christensen, seniors Taryn Harris and Megan Collier, juniors Cassie Anderson and Holly Frost, and sophomore Kristy Ardavanis.  Four of the six divers participated at Zones in Austin, Texas, during the 2009-10 season.

Harris was the top finisher for NAU last spring placing 12th on 1-meter.  Collier followed in 16th place on 1-meter while Christensen turned in the best Lumberjack finish on 3-meter in 16th.

In her first Zone competition, Ardavanis posted impressive results placing 20th on 3-meter and 22nd on 1-meter.  Anderson and Frost will be competing in their first Zone meet.

The Lumberjacks are one of 20 teams at the NCAA Zone E Regionals.  There are 53 women competing in Minneapolis with six qualifying spots available for the NCAA Championships.  The qualifying process will not be complete till Saturday but listed below.

 

Qualifying Standards

1st Qualifier: 1st place finisher on platform

2nd Qualifier: 1st place finisher on 3 meter

3rd Qualifier: 1st place finisher on 1 meter

4th Qualifier: 2nd place finisher on 3 meter

5th Qualifier: 2nd place finisher on 1 meter

6th Qualifier: 3rd place fininsher on 3 meter    

 

DID YOU KNOW… The Lumberjacks had 11 of their 15 intercollegiate teams record a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher led by women's soccer at 3.42. Women's basketball was close behind at 3.38, followed by women's cross country (3.38), volleyball (3.33), women's golf (3.31), men's cross country (3.26) and swimming and diving (3.22).
