KANSAS CITY, Mo. – For the 14th consecutive season, the Northern Arizona University women's soccer team has received the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Team Academic Award. The Lumberjacks posted a cumulative team grade point average of 3.40 for the 2015-16 academic year.
The NSCAA annually recognizes college and high school soccer programs that have excelled in the classroom, in addition to their work on the field. A total of 892 soccer teams (315 men, 577 women) posted a team grade point average of 3.0 or higher, thereby earning the NSCAA College Team Academic Award for the 2015-16 academic year.
Head Coach Andre Luciano's team has received the honor dating back to 2003. Under his tutelage, there has been no shortage of academic accolades. Luciano has produced 143 All-Big Sky Academic selections, four Golden Eagle Top Scholar Athletes, 10 CoSIDA Academic All-District 8 selections, one ESPN Academic All-American of the Year, two CoSIDA Academic All-Americans, four NSCAA All-Scholar Team honorees, two NAU Female Scholar Athletes of the Year, six Golden Axe Award winners, one Big Sky Conference Scholar-Athlete and 288 Golden Eagle Award recipients.
Last season alone, 15 players were named to the All-Big Sky Academic Team. Selections for the 2016 campaign will be announced at the conclusion of the regular season. The Lumberjacks will close out the year at home versus Southern Utah on Friday, Oct. 28. The top six teams will compete in the Big Sky Conference Championships on Nov. 2, Nov. 4 and Nov. 6.
