Game Notes

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – The season is finally here as the Northern Arizona women's soccer team will begin the 2014 season on the road against UNLV on Friday, Aug. 22, in the UNLV Rebel Classic. After Friday's match against the Rebels, the Lumberjacks will close out the weekend in Las Vegas with a matchup against UC Riverside on Sunday.

Looking forward to the 2014 campaign, head coach Andre Luciano enters his 14th year at the helm for Northern Arizona and returns a talented roster infused with young talent. The Lumberjacks bring back 13 letterwinners along with six All-Big Sky Conference selections. Not only does Luciano return major contributors from last season's squad but also brings in 11 freshmen eager to step onto the pitch and make an immediate impact on a team that looks to build off last year's 11-5-3 record and a second place finish in the Big Sky.

Coach Luciano Quote of the Week

"This is where we really measure ourselves to see where we are at. UNLV is going to be a good opponent, who we usually play tight with every year. I am sure they are going to try and prove to their new coach that they are a good team, so we need to be prepared. UC Riverside had a great run at the end of the Big West last season and they are going to be one of the most dangerous teams we face at the beginning of this season. We have to make sure that we finish the weekend strong."

Series

The Lumberjacks have a 1-4-2 all-time record against UNLV. Last year, the two schools met in Flagstaff and ended a 0-0 tie. This will be the fourth meeting between Northern Arizona and UC Riverside. NAU and the Highlanders met in Riverside last year resulting in a 1-1 tie.

Scouting UNLV

UNLV is coming off a 10-8-3 season and a 5-5-0 record in the Mountain West Conference. The Rebels will have to adjust with life without Jenn Wolfe who was the Rebels' leading goal scorer with seven and led the team in points with 21. Junior Susie Bernal was second on last year's team with 10 points and she will look to lead the charge for UNLV. The Rebels also have two goalkeepers who did not play last season as Kylie Wassell played every minute last season for UNLV. The Rebels were picked to finish seventh in the Mountain West under first-year head coach Chris Shaw.

Scouting UC Riverside

UC Riverside is coming off an 8-12-2 season with a 4-4 Big West Conference record. The Highlanders return their leader in points from 2013 in Tyler Cunningham as she tallied 10 points last year with five goals. After a Second Team All-Big West selection in 2013, Cunningham was named to the 11-player Big West Preseason All-Conference team. Goalkeeper Elizabeth Silas also returns for UCR who started and played in 20 matches posting a 1.27 goals against average. UC Riverside's season ended last season in the Big West Conference Championship in a 1-1 tie and a 2-1 loss in PK's to Cal State Fullerton.
