FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - Friday and Sunday's contests against Montana and Eastern Washington will be the final matches for the Northern Arizona women's soccer team in the regular season. The Lumberjacks are right in the middle of the Big Sky Conference playoffs sitting currently in second place. Northern Arizona is riding a two-game winning streak defeating Northern Colorado and North Dakota in its final home matches this season. After shutting out both Northern Colorado and North Dakota, senior defender Alana D'Onofrio was named this week's Big Sky Defensive Player of the Week.
This will be the 20th meeting between Northern Arizona and Montana with the Griz having the upper hand with a 13-5-1 record against the Lumberjacks all-time. Montana has won the last two meetings against Northern Arizona with both matches by a score of 1-0. The Lumberjacks have had some success against Eastern Washington as they post a 10-4-1 record against the Eagles all-time. This will also be the 20th meeting between NAU and EWU. Last season, the schools tied 0-0 in Flagstaff, Ariz. The Lumberjacks have not lost to Eastern Washington since 2004.
Montana is coming off its second win in Big Sky Conference play defeating Eastern Washington 1-0. The Griz are led this season by sophomore midfielder Mackenzie Akins who leads the team with 10 points this season (3 goals, 4 assists). Senior defender Maddey Frey leads the team in goals this season with four. The Griz have received scoring this season from many players. Five players this season have scored three goals or more this season. Montana leads the Big Sky Conference this year in shot attempts (259), and is second in corner kicks (80). Despite leading the conference in shot attempts, the Griz are eighth in goals per game at 1.06. Receiving the majority of the minutes in front of goal is Kendra McMillen who has started 13 games with a 1.27 goals against average. Also receiving playing time at goalkeeper is Kailey Norman who has a 1.43 goals against average.
Scouting Eastern Washington
Eastern Washington is on a three-game losing streak in the Big Sky Conference. Junior forward Cassie Black is fourth in the Big Sky in shots this season with 43. She also leads the team in goals this season with four for a total of eight points. Five different women have scored for the Eagles this season. Junior goalkeeper Natalie Schwery has played in 1,415 minutes out of 1,470 minutes this season for the Eagles. She has a 1.65 goals against average this season and is fifth in the Big Sky this season with 74 saves.
