Weaver Named Big Sky Defensive POTW After Career Weekend
OGDEN, Utah – Junior Lauren Weaver garnered her first Big Sky Defensive Player of the Week award of the season as announced by the conference office on Tuesday for matches played from October 2-8. The weekly award is the third of Weaver's career after being honored twice last season. She is the second Lumberjack to receive Defensive Player of the Week honors this season following sophomore Diane Buzzard three weeks ago.
Weaver recorded two shutouts over the weekend and helped the Lumberjacks notch a pair of 0-0 double overtime ties with Portland State and Sacramento State. She made a total of 22 saves in the two games and kept both of the Lumberjack opponents off the scoreboard despite NAU being outshot by a combined 40-23 margin. On Friday, Weaver made a career-high 12 saves against the Vikings and she followed that up with a 10-save game against the Hornets on Sunday. She became just the sixth goalkeeper in school history to record at least 12 saves in a game and has now recorded double-digit saves in three of the last four games. With her save total last weekend, Weaver also moved into fourth all-time in school history in saves as she now has 201 for her career.
The two games last weekend was just the latest of an impressive seven-game stretch for Weaver. Over her last seven games dating back to the Florida Gulf Coast match on Sept. 14, she has lowered her goals against average from 2.10 to 0.85 and upped her save percentage from .773 to .890. In conference play, Weaver has been even better as she's allowed just two goals in her last five games. Against conference opponents, she has a 0.37 goals against average, a .956 save percentage and 43 saves, while posting four shutouts in five conference matches.
Entering this weekend's play, Weaver is first in the Big Sky in save percentage, second in goals against average and third in saves. She's also among the top goalkeepers in the nation as she ranks No. 13 in save percentage, No. 63 in goals against average and No. 73 in saves.
The Lumberjacks will head out for their final road trip of the regular season this weekend beginning with their first trip to Grand Forks, N.D. to take on new Big Sky member North Dakota on Friday at 1 p.m.
