Soccer Gives Up Late Goal, Falls 1-0 at Montana
MISSOULA, Mont. – The Northern Arizona soccer team battled Montana all game long, but they were downed by a Grizzly goal in the 86th minute, to fall 1-0 Friday afternoon in Missoula. The loss dropped the Lumberjacks record to 2-9-7 on the season and 1-2-4 in the conference.
The Grizzlies got off to a fast start, putting up five shots in the first 13 minutes before the Lumberjacks attempted their first shot of the game. In the 19th minute, senior Sam Monahan's attempt went wide right of the net, and freshman Jordan Post followed with a shot of her own a minute later, but was denied by Montana's junior goalkeeper Kristin Hoon.
The Lumberjacks tried to find the game's first goal early in the second half and had several chances at the goal. Following a corner kick by senior Jenna Samora, senior Chelsea Bednarz's shot sailed wide of the net minutes into the second period. Monahan then got off two looks in the 52nd and 56th minutes, but could not find the back of the net.
After freshman Diane Buzzard's shot was saved off sophomore Megan Jerome's corner kick in the 65th minute, the Lumberjacks dodged a bullet on three consecutive Grizzly shots that hit the crossbar, was blocked and sailed high. But Montana ultimately broke through with the game-winner with four minutes left in the game when junior Erin Craig sent in a corner kick that freshman Tyler Adair headed in for her first career goal.
The Grizzlies held the advantage in shots at 17-7 and corner kicks at 9-4. Monahan had a team-high three shots and sophomore Lauren Weaver made three saves in the defeat.
With the loss, the Lumberjacks were eliminated from conference tournament contention and will miss the conference tournament for the first time in four years. They return home on Sunday for Senior Day against Eastern Washington at 12 p.m. The team will honor their 10 graduating seniors in a ceremony prior to the game. Sunday's match will be televised live on Fox College Sports, Fox Sports Arizona and cable channel 4.
The match on Sunday will also be the soccer team's Think Pink game in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Also, a representative from the Sojourn Cancer Bears will be passing out free teddy bears to anyone who is a cancer survivor or is currently undergoing cancer treatment.
