OGDEN, Utah – After scoring two goals and assisting on another last weekend against Idaho State and Weber State, senior Sam Monahan was named the Big Sky Conference Offensive Player of the Week today. It is her first player of the week honor of her career and the team's second of the season. Sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Weaver was named the Big Sky Conference Defensive Player of the Week earlier this season.
"I'm excited, I'm very happy," Monahan said. "We needed to get some goals and we've had many chances to finish off games, but haven't been doing so. We haven't been lethal in front of goal, and we had three seniors score this weekend. The difference was that we capitalized and that was huge for us."
In Friday's match against Idaho State, Monahan assisted on senior Noel Guevara's game-tying goal in the 65th minute to even the score at 2-2. Monahan later netted the game-winner in the 84th minute, propelling the Lumberjacks to a 3-2 victory, their first conference win of the season.
Monahan followed her efforts on Friday with another goal on Sunday against Weber State. The Lumberjacks were down 1-0 to the Wildcats until the 76th minute, when Monahan got a touch on the ball, sending it into the left side of the net. Her goal sent the game into overtime, where the Lumberjacks eventually came away with a 1-1 draw.
The goals were the fifth and sixth for Monahan this season. She leads the team and is tied for second in the Big Sky with six goals, which equals her career total coming into the season. Monahan also has two assists on the season, putting her in second place for career assists. She is just four assists shy of tying the school record for assists, set by Brenna Boies last season. Her 14 points this season is also a team-high.
The Lumberjacks hit the road this weekend with matches at Sacramento State and Portland State, as they try to continue their climb up the Big Sky standings.
