Sun, Sun Devils Defeat Womens Soccer, 4-0
TEMPE, Ariz. – On a scorching, 103 degree afternoon in the
desert, Arizona State junior forward Karin Volpe tallied two goals
and two assists and the Sun Devils allowed only one Northern
Arizona shot on a goal in a 4-0 victory. The loss ended NAU’s
four-game winning streak, dropping the Lumberjacks to 5-5-1, while
Arizona State improved to 7-1-2.
The first shot of the game came in the 14th minute, as Sun Devil junior Alexandra Elston sent a pass to Volpe for an open look along the right side of the field. The shot hit the right side of the net, but just 29 seconds later the same pair connected on an identical play in which Volpe was able to finish to give ASU a 1-0 lead.
Arizona State would add a second goal in the 23rd minute, as Volpe stayed just onside to open up a break on the right side of the box. She would send a cross to a wide-open teammate, finding sophomore Courtney Tinnin for the finish and a 2-0 advantage.
The Sun Devils had a great opportunity to pad their lead in the 34th minute as NAU goalkeeper Tori Rocke robbed Volpe on a fine sliding save. ASU freshman Bianca Doller had a wide-open rebound, but Lumberjack defender Ally Cwiekowski stopped the shot along the left post.
With three minutes left in the first half, Sun Devil freshman Kiara Williams hit the right post off a breakaway and two minutes later was robbed on leaping stop by Rocke, as the home team took a 2-0 lead to the break.
Volpe was at it again early in the second half, narrowly missing a volley and getting stopped by Rocke on another open shot. The Lumberjacks got their first shot of the game in the 55th minute, as sophomore Jenna Samora fired wide along the right side.
Unfortunately, ASU would score again just four minutes later, as Tinnin found Volpe for another breakaway. This time Rocke was defenseless, as the junior scored again to make the lead 3-0.
A free kick by junior defender Kristi Andreassen from near midfield resulted in the first, and only, NAU shot on goal in the 75th minute. The try was stopped just below the crossbar on a leaping effort by ASU goalkeeper Briana Silvestri, who came down hard on her left knee and had to be helped off the field.
With three minutes remaining in the contest, freshman Amy Dougher found open space off a cross from Volpe and beat Rocke to the bottom left corner, finalizing a 4-0 victory for the Sun Devils.
The Lumberjacks were out-shot 24-5, with ASU holding a 10-1 advantage in shots on goal. Despite allowing four goals, Rocke made several outstanding saves in totaling six stops for the match. Silvestri’s one save was good for her fourth shutout of the season.
Northern Arizona is off next week before opening Big Sky play at Sacramento State on Friday, October 9, at 1 p.m.
