OGDEN, Utah – For the third time this season, Northern Arizona University's Sofia Anokhina received Big Sky Golfer of the Week honors after another first-place performance earlier this week at the Sacramento State Invitational.
While the tournament, which was scheduled for three rounds initially, was cut short because of inclement weather yesterday, Anokhina remained red-hot this spring with a two-round 3-under-par 141 score. In the first round, the Lumberjack true sophomore logged a 3-under 69 before scoring an even-par 72 to secure her third victory in four tries this spring season.
Anokhina is now scoring at an average clip of 70.62 in 2017 alone, while her average round score of 73.25 for the entire season ranks No. 1 in NAU history.
With the win, Anokhina has now tied the NAU record for most tournament victories in a single golf season. Anokhina and former Lumberjack Stephanie Kim are the only athletes in the history of the program to notch three tourney titles in such a span.
It is worth noting, though, that while Kim accomplished the feat during the 2009-10 season in 11 tournaments played, Anokhina has reached the same milestone playing in only seven invites this academic year.
Anokhina and the Lumberjack golf team compete next the weekend of April 7 at the PING/ASU Invitational in Tempe, Ariz.
