OGDEN, Utah – After becoming the first Northern Arizona University golfer to win a tournament since former Lumberjack Jacquie LeMarr did in the March of 2014, current sophomore Sofia Anokhina was named the Big Sky's Co-Golfer of the Week Wednesday.
The Northern Arizona University golf team open its spring season at UC Riverside's "Battle at the Rock" tournament this week with a fourth-place finish (54-over-par 918), and Anokhina was instrumental in keeping the 'Jacks in contention all week long.
The native of Moscow, Russia, recorded seven birdie putts—including three in the final of 18 holes Tuesday morning—and an even-par score of 216 (71-73-72) over the tournament's three rounds en route to finishing first among the 84 golfer field. In fact, from the moment she teed off Monday morning to the end of the tournament, Anokhina was in the lead or had a share of the lead the entire time.
"[Anokhina] was spot-on this week," said head coach Brad Bedortha following the end of the tournament. "As a coach, you just have that golf instinct she's going to play great the moment she steps on the golf course. It's just so fun to watch someone that is so in control of her golf game."
The win for Anokhina, who also won the Russian Amateur Open Championship last summer, was the first of her career. The Lumberjack sophomore also logged the third-best single season scoring average in NAU history last year and looks to be poised for an even better one in 2017. In four tournaments and 12 rounds already played during 2016-17, Anokhina is scoring at a 75.25 average round clip.
This is the second GOTW accolade of Anokhina's career. Her first came almost a year to the day (Feb. 17, 2016).
