KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – The Lumberjack golf team competed in the first round of the 2016 Palmetto Intercollegiate today, recording a team score of 38-over-par 326 and finishing in 19th on the leaderboard.
It was a tough day on the links for the NAU squad, who could really never generate any kind of momentum during Sunday's action. Sophomore Sofia Anokhina looked good on the back nine to start her round, going for a 2-over 38 mark, but tallied a couple bogeys on the front half of the course to finish at 7-over 79.
Her junior teammate Sierra Bezdicek also appeared to be headed toward a very respectable round against some firm competition, but a double-bogey, bogey, bogey to close out the round hindered her score a bit as she turned in an 8-over 80 tally.
Senior Kim Cifuentes, coming off a good final two-round showing three weeks ago at the Cowgirl Desert Intercollegiate, mustered a 10-over 82 earlier today, while true freshman Loren Skibba actually pieced together the best score of any NAU golfer on the front nine Sunday, finishing at 13-over 85.
After riding a streak of five consecutive rounds of 74 or below, junior Kaitlyn Saum shot a 17-over 89 during the first round this morning. She and the rest of her teammates will surely look to get back on track tomorrow when they tee-off round two at 8:30 a.m. ET, 5:30 a.m. Flagstaff.
