Women’s Golf Tees Off at Rio Verde Friday; Kim Earns Big Sky Honor
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – The Northern Arizona women's golf team continues spring play this weekend at the 2012 Rio Verde Invitational at the Quail Run course at Rio Verde Country Club.
The tournament is a 54-hole event spanning three days with 18 holes of golf played each day. Friday's (March 9) first round is a 1 p.m. start, while Saturday (March 10) and Sunday (March 11) begin at 8 a.m. All rounds begin with shot gun starts.
The 2012 Rio Verde Invitational Field consists of 16 teams. Wichita State and Yale are new to the tournament in 2012 - Akron, Arkansas-Little Rock, Ball State, Bradley, Eastern Michigan, Kansas, Missouri State, Northern Arizona, Ohio, Penn State, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Toledo, Western Michigan, Wichita State, Xavier and Yale.
The Lumberjacks are coming off a fifth-place finish at the Red Rocks Invitational last weekend in Sedona. NAU was led by junior Stephanie Kim, who tied for fifth overall in the individual standings.
Kim was named the Big Sky Golfer of the Week on Thursday for her performance in the tournament. Kim, from Tempe, Ariz., shot rounds of 77, 75 for an eight-over-par 152 in the 36-hole tournament played at the Oakcreek Country Club in Sedona, Ariz., on March 3-4.
"It is a huge confidence builder for her," said Northern Arizona coach Brad Bedortha. "She needed that."
Kim helped Northern Arizona to a fifth-place finish in the 20-team tournament. NAU shot rounds of 319, 313 for a 632. Northern Arizona was tops among the six Big Sky teams in the event. Eastern Michigan won the tournament with a 603. Seattle's Caitlin McCleary was the individual champion, five shots in front of Kim.
This is Kim's fifth career Golfer of the Week Honor.
