RENO, Nev. – Redshirt junior Olivia Lucero was voted to the All-Big Sky Third Team on Sunday afternoon – the day before the conference tournament. Lucero, NAU's leading scorer, was the only Lumberjack honored on the all-conference teams. It is the first career All-Big Sky honor for Lucero.
Lucero made the most of her first season on the court with the Northern Arizona women's basketball team, averaging a team-best 14.8 points per game. The transfer from Loyola Marymount ranks ninth in the Big Sky in scoring and was a steady contributor all year long. She led the team with 21 double-digit scoring games, including a team-high five 20-point efforts. Last month, she became the first Lumberjack in three years to record three consecutive 20-point games since All-American Amanda Frost strung together seven straight games.
After sitting out last season in her transfer year, Lucero made a statement in her NAU debut, leading the 'Jacks to a season-opening win at UTEP with 19 points. She posted her lone double-double of the season two games later at Cal Poly, pulling down a season-best 13 rebounds and notched her first career 20-point game in the blowout win versus Youngstown State at home. She capped her 20-point streak with a season-high 29 points at Montana State – who finished the regular season as the Big Sky Tournament's top overall seed.
The guard from Phoenix, Ariz. elevated her three-point shooting in league play, shooting 37.5 percent from long distance to rank in the top 10. For the season overall, Lucero shot 34.7 percent from behind the arc. She leads the Lumberjacks in free throws made (92) and attempted (119) and finished the regular season with a 77.3 percentage at the charity stripe.
Her contributions were not limited to scoring as she ranks third on the team in both rebounds per game (4.7) and total rebounds (132). Her 72 assists are currently tied for second-most, while her 32 steals also rank her second on the team.
