PALO ALTO, Calif. – Lumberjacks Matt Baxter and Blaise Ferro competed in the men's 5000-meter event at Stanford University's Cardinal Classic Friday night, with both logging what-would-be top-10 times on the Big Sky's performance list this season.
Baxter, running in the first of two sections, nearly set a new personal-record tonight on Cobb Track, finishing seventh in the race with a 13:46.24 time—two seconds off his PR. In the other section was Ferro, making his second official appearance in an NAU jersey with a 14:09.72 mark.
As of right now, Baxter would slide into second place on the conference's 5K performance list while Ferro would follow at No. 6.
On the women's side, it was Karina Ernst and Emily Roughan racing in the 5K event. This was the first competitive 5K for Ernst as a Lumberjack, subsequently hustling her way to an NAU PR of 17:05.04 in the second of two sections tonight. Roughan was not far behind, besting an old PR of 19:08.80 with a 17:08.98 time—shaving an incredible two minutes off her previous career best.
As far as the conference's performance list is concerned, Ernst and Roughan would fall into the No. 11 and 12 spots, respectively, as of this very minute.
It was Maggie Carruth once again highlighting things in the mid-distance, 800m run at Stanford for the Lumberjacks, missing out on a personal best by a second with a 2:07.22 time in the strong and deep first section. The Big Sky's No. 1 ranked athlete in this event finish in sixth in her particular section.
Her teammate Melanie Zibrat, whose effort is always top-notch, crossed the finish line in the fourth section of the 800m run with a 2:15.66 mark. While it wasn't a PR for Zibrat, it feels as though she is on the precipice of achieving such an accomplishment soon.
Action from the 2017 Cardinal Classic picks up tomorrow for the Lumberjacks at 5:13 p.m. PT with sophomore Kyle Havriliak in the steeplechase event.
